The Chess Connection
There is a "Hyper Modern" way to play chess. In a nutshell, hyper modern chess players try to control the center of the board without necessarily having pieces in the center of the board. They use their knights and bishops to affect the center from a distance before they move on to other plans.
I see an interesting parallel as people in first world countries look to apply this same kind of philosophy to real life.
Between what we can do with computers, and the incomplete way that we wage war in this era, we are trying to control "the center" without actually being there. We are trying to get things done at a distance more than ever before, and we are often very content with this approach, even when it fails to accomplish the goal, because we enjoy the greater level of comfort that this long range approach affords us.
My profile icon, which displays the phrase "b8 to c6" is a reference to an opening move in chess. The player using the black army would move their queen side knight forward and towards the middle.
